FAQs

What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is therapy while the client is in a deep state of relaxation, i.e. in a hypnotic state. Hypnotherapy as a practice has been around for many years and its practice can be traced back to many ancient cultures.

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of mind that we all experience on a daily basis. Think about those ten seconds just before you nod off to sleep at night, or maybe being totally engrossed in a good book or movie. Hypnosis is just a feeling of deep relaxation and when you are in this beautifully relaxed state it is possible to access the powerful part of the brain known as the subconscious.

What is the subconscious mind?
The subconscious roughly accounts for approximately 90% of the brain’s capacity, with the conscious mind making up the remaining 10%. The subconscious brain is where all our emotions are stored and therefore is responsible for our reactions, interpretations and general behaviour. The most important role that the subconscious plays is an automatic function that controls our breathing, the circulation of blood around our bodies and the repair of damaged tissue ie the healing process.

What is hypnotherapy used for?
There are many issues that hypnotherapy can help including stress and anxiety reduction, weight loss, emotional eating, fears and phobias, self confidence and self esteem issues, relationships, public speaking and presenting issues, insomnia, stopping smoking, exam and driving test nervousness, irritable bowel syndrome and pain management. These are all areas I can help with.

What does hypnosis feel like?
Nothing…absolutely nothing! You sit back in a comfortable chair, close your eyes and enter a state of relaxation and calmness. You are fully aware of what is going on around you and remain totally in control. This is a very pleasant state and can be likened to daydreaming.

Is hypnotherapy safe?
Hypnotherapy is completely safe and is a pleasant and relaxing experience.

Will I “lose control” when under hypnosis?/am scared I will not be in control.
No… this is not the case and the contrary is true. You will feel very much ‘in control’. You will be fully aware of what you are saying and will remember everything. You cannot be made to do anything against your morals or judgement whilst in hypnosis.

Are there some people who cannot be hypnotised?
Everybody can be hypnotised as long as they realise that they are in control. People who think they cannot be hypnotised are those who have a fear of what could happen if they ‘let go’. I am a great believer in self-hypnosis and once a person realises that they remain in control, then they can take themselves into hypnosis very easily.

How many sessions does it take?
On average, clients need between three to five sessions. These are one hour in duration and spread about a week apart.
